أما في إسرائيل، نال اشكول ثقة حزبه المابام، رغم كل الانتقادات التي وجهت اليه لعجزه عن التحرك والعمل والرد بعنف ضد مصر.
وكانت الولايات المتحدة تنتج أفضل الأسلحة ولا تتردد في منح إسرائيل أحدثها، لذلك نجحت إسرائيل في وقف تقدم القوات المصرية والسورية سريعا وانتقلت فيما بعد إلى الهجوم فنجحت في استرداد أغلب الأراضي التي خسرتها ونشطت الجهود الدولية لوقف القتال.

قام اشكول في تلك الليلة بأكثر من محاولة لابعاد دايان عن وزارة الدفاع، وذلك بأن عرض عليه عدة عروض من بينها القيادة العامة للجبهة الجنوبية، وهو منصب يمكن اشغال دايان به بعيدا عن السياسة لمدة طويلة، ومنصب المستشار العسكري، الذي يعني مسؤولية بلا سلطات. دايان رفض كل هذه العروض. في نهاية اليوم تبين لاشكول ولاعضاء حكومته، ان قيام حكومة اتحاد وطني ضرورة للخروج باسرائيل من هذه الازمة وانه من الضروري اقناع كتلتي جاحال ورافي بالانضمام للوزارة. لم ترض الكتلتان ذلك إذا لم يتول دايان منصب وزير الدفاع.
